I went into business when I was very young and during those tumultuous years, I always found ways of improving myself, and my art. I have never been afraid to begin anew. All of the endeavors that I have undertaken in my life have been done so with a critical eye, high standards and a generous amount of self-criticism. To me, art is more than a pipe I make; it is the way in which I live my life.
Pipes to me are the perfect marriage of form and function. There is something to be said for a cherished object that is a pleasure to hold, gives the owner great joy, all while performing it’s job perfectly. I am honored to unlock the hidden potential in every block of briar I have acquired. God has given some of us the talent to look within and I am proud to be among the ranks of those artists given that gift.
I primarily use Italian Briar wood, but occasionally will use a piece of Algerian or Grecian. Each region produces briar with it’s own distinctive personality. I allow each block to have a say in the style of pipe it will become. It is always humbling for the artist to take a back seat to his creation, but with carving, it is the only way to achieve the best result. I very much like to use a variety of exotic woods, horn, ivory, and silver as embellishments on my pipes. I never stop getting excited when I get to the finishing stage, the combining of briar, embellishment, stem and the finished coloring. My stems are all hand cut from materials like ebonite, acrylic, and vintage bakelite.
I am committed to continually working to achieve the highest quality of smoking pipes I am capable of making.
